SJCHS Historic Sites
Two special historic sites we’re proud to protect, preserve, and invite others to explore.

White Pigeon Prairie U.S. Land Office
The White Pigeon Prairie U.S. Land Office is one of the true hidden gems of Michigan history , and the only surviving land office in the state.
Originally opened in 1831, this beautifully restored Greek Revival building once played a major role in the settlement and development of western Michigan. Today, visitors can explore exhibits on land sales, surveying tools, settlement history, and life in Michigan’s territorial days.
The site is open during select summer dates and special events, including White Pigeon Days and Civil War encampments. Group tours are also available by request.

Wahbememe County Park and Gravesite
This peaceful historic site honors Potawatomi Chief Wahbememe, also known as White Pigeon, whose legendary warning helped save early settlers in southern Michigan. The site includes his memorial gravesite as well as a Veterans Memorial honoring service members from St. Joseph County.
It’s a meaningful place to reflect on both Native American history and the many stories woven into the region’s past.
