What’s Ready To Be Explored
Inside the St. Joseph County Historical Society
One Room Schools Archives

St. Joseph County had approximately 125 one-room schools. We currently preserve records, photographs, and histories for 101 of them.
This collection offers a rare look into early education and rural community life, including:
Student and teacher records
Class photographs (1850s–1960s)
Yearbooks and memorabilia
Township-based school histories
Reunion materials and personal collections
Why explore this?
These schools were the heart of rural life and many local families still have ties hidden in these records. You may find your relatives as students, teachers, or even in rare class photos that exist nowhere else.
Civil War & Military Collections

Our Civil War collection is one of the most historically significant parts of our archives.
Many St. Joseph County residents served in the Civil War, not only in Michigan regiments but also in units formed across multiple states.
This includes:
Local soldiers in Michigan and out-of-state regiments
Service records and unit assignments
Michigan Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and U.S. Colored Troops connections
Civil War–era military documentation tied to St. Joseph County families
Why explore this?
This is where local names turn into real service stories. Many visitors discover ancestors here, and for some it is the first time they see their family connected to national history.
Family and Land Research

Our genealogy and land collections help researchers trace both people and property across generations.
Materials include:
Family histories
Obituaries
Wills and estate papers
Town directories (1871–2010)
Photographic collections
Plat maps and land ownership records
Federal land patent materials
Why explore this?
This is where family history comes together, who lived here, what they owned, and how they moved through the county over time. It is one of the most direct ways to connect yourself to local history.
General County Collections

Our reference collections document the broader history of St. Joseph County and surrounding areas through original and secondary materials.
This includes:
Deeds and land records
Census and court documents
Township and village histories
Photographs and visual archives
Why explore this?
This is where the county’s story is actually built, land, people, and communities over time. It is often the fastest way to connect a name to a place, a family, or a piece of local history you did not know existed.
